Position Summary
The testing process may include a practical exam.

This position performs solid waste collection duties on commercial and residential routes. This position requires a Class B Washington State Driver's License by date of hire and a Class A CDL within 6 months.
 
Examples of Job Duties
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
When assigned to Solid Waste Division:
  • Collects all solid waste on assigned route, including driving vehicle or serving as assistant, and disposes of it at an authorized site.
  • Cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes refuse trucks.
  • Maintains all containers on assigned route, including repairing and painting damaged containers.
  • Performs preventive truck maintenance.
  • Responds to citizen complaints regarding collection service and provides advice on the proper packing of refuse.
  • Maintains route books.
  • Handles hazardous materials, such as battery acid, paints, and other types of chemical refuse.
 
Maintenance Worker II assigned to all departments perform these essential functions:
  • Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs, and services municipal utilities, facilities, or equipment as assigned.
  • Effectively maintains and updates files, maps, and other records, related to installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of municipal facilities or utilities; submits work orders.
  • Operates assigned equipment, makes minor field repairs and adjustments; reports need for major repair to supervisor and Fleet/Facilities Manager.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  • May supervise the work of workers assigned to crew. 
  • May be assigned to other divisions performing work requiring similar skills during times of peak work loads, manpower shortage, public emergency, or other times when critical work needs to be completed. 

 

Qualifications
A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position.
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Three years experience performing a variety of the essential duties of the position. 
  • Must possess a Washington State Driver's License.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date:
    • Class "A" Washington State Commercial Driver's License without air brakes restriction and with tanker endorsement (Sanitation Division must possess, as a minimum, a Class B Commercial Driver's License by date of hire). 
    • First aid and CPR certifications.
    • Flagging certification.
  • Ability to operate a windows based computer and software applications related to assigned division.
  • Ability to effectively update and maintain records for assigned department/division using related recordkeeping systems.
  • Ability to work safely and comply with all safety regulations, standards, guidelines, and practices regarding assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently follow established procedures and specific directions and instructions.
  • Prior experience operating a large truck in congested traffic conditions and welding are desirable.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; kneel, bend, or climb and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis; lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis; and lift and/or move between 50 - 100 pounds with assistance. Employees in the Sanitation Division must occasionally push and/or pull, without assistance, heavy commercial containers weighing up to 150 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
 
This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and also will sometimes work in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions. The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
 
This position works a regular schedule, however, incumbents may be called in to work at irregular times in emergency situations.
 
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
