Summary of Job
The position is under the general supervision of Public Works/Parks Superintendent, Deputy Director of Municipal Operations and the Lead Mechanic to perform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of City vehicles, equipment and machinery. This position is responsible for assisting the Lead Mechanic with inventory control, as well as quality and timeliness of all maintenance repairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS to include the following:
- Assist the City Mechanic III in setting priorities for equipment and fleet repairs.
- In the absence of City Mechanic III, supervise the position of Mechanic I in the performance of maintenance and repair duties.
- Assist in developing equipment and fleet specifications.
- Repair and maintain vehicles and heavy equipment including graders, front-end loaders, refuse trucks, plow trucks, pickup trucks, automobiles, power equipment, and other related tools, machinery and equipment.
- Perform metal and fiberglass body work.
- Perform metal fabrications, including but not limited to, welding, cutting, brazing and carbon arc.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment problems, including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic.
- Repair and/or rebuild diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, clutches, hydraulic and electrical systems and all other supporting equipment.
- Maintain maintenance and repair records and prepares reports.
- Respond to emergency situations and performs tasks as deemed necessary by the City of Menasha.
- Report for work as scheduled.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Considerable knowledge of tools, equipment, equipment, material, methods and practices used in the automotive and/or mechanical trades.
- Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment, trucks and automobiles
- Ability to drive trucks and heavy equipment.
- Ability to use state of the art diagnostic equipment in the analysis of vehicles and equipment problems.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical failures and defects and take necessary corrective action.
- Ability to give, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of power and hand tools.
- Ability to coordinate and schedule work in an efficient manner.
- Considerable knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems with the ability to diagnose and repair such systems.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- ASE Certification for heavy and medium duty diesel truck, light duty and automotive vehicles.
- Valid Class B, C, and D Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement, with good driving record.
- Certification in welding (rod and wire feed), cutting torches and brazing, hydraulics and pneumatics; or a combination of schooling, and experience of not less than five (5) years.
- Ability and willingness to stay current with advanced technology through employer provided training and/or formal classes.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and use both hands to handle, touch, grasp; reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
- Specific vision abilities include close and distant vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
- Ability to bend, twist, squat, climb and lift 50 pounds regularly during each 8-hour work shift.
- Overtime may be required.
