Salary Range: $33,320 - $40,905

Position Purpose
Coordinates safety program and instructs fleet drivers in matters pertaining to traffic and safety regulations.  Confers with department heads concerning problems, accident rates, and abuse of equipment; recommends measures to improve safety records and to conserve equipment.


  • Investigates reports of improper use of buses, such as speeding and reckless/unsafe driving.
  • Investigates all accidents and submits reports.
  • Investigates and confers with principals concerning student behavior, parental complaints, and missing students.
  • Investigates complaints of possible hazardous walking routes to schools and bus stops.
  • Evaluates safety of bus stop locations and recommends alternate locations.
  • Coordinates special events for safety with the loading and unloading of students.


  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, and Texas rules of the road.
  • Knowledge of federal and state guidelines and District policies and procedures regarding education and students.
  • Skill in accurate report writing using business language, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Skill in accident investigations, including assessing the safety of a scene to be investigated, managing witnesses, and compiling facts/data.
  • Skill in active listening; giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points communicated, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  • Skill in operating applicable software including email and word processing to status work assignments.
  • Skill in critical thinking; using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses and formulate solutions or conclusions to problems.
  • Ability to read and understand safety manuals, calculate mileage, and load counts.
  • Ability to operate school bus, office equipment, 2-way radio, radar gun, and safety equipment.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools/Equipment Used:  Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture:  Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion:  Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting:  Frequent heavy lifting and carrying (10 to 50 pounds).
  • Exerting:  Occasional exerting 50 to 150 pounds to move objects during an investigation, possibly carry a child, or possibly restrain a child or adult.
  • Environment:  Works 70% in the field and 30% in an office setting, including facilitating safety training in a classroom, outside, or on a bus; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance:  Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands:  Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions; may respond to emergency situations, and remain or return to investigate; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education:  Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Certification/License:  Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver’s license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement or ability to obtain license within 60 days after employment; insurable by the District’s insurance carrier.
  • Experience:  Must have law enforcement experience 2 to 5 years.
  • Language:  Bilingual (English/Spanish) working proficiency preferred in some settings.


  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
  • Driving and accident record:

Valid Texas Department of Public Safety Driver Record Check Type 3A-Certified list of all crashes and violations

  • NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
    • moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
    • failure to provide proof of valid driver’s license or proof of insurance;
    • equipment violations.
  • NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
  • NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
  • NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
  • NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
  • NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
  • NO operating a vehicle without owner’s permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
  • NO permitting an unlicensed person to drive.
  • NO speeding more than 20 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • NO history of a conviction in a commercial or personal motor vehicle.


  • Additional restrictions may apply if directed by FWISD’s Fleet Insurance Carrier.
