Incumbent serves as Truck Driver for the Solid Waste Division of the Richmond Sanitary District, responsible forcollecting solid waste from residential and commercial roll-off containers and transporting to landfill.

Duties:

Operates a variety of trucks and hand/power tools in performance of duties, including but not limited to dump trucks, hook and rear loading trash trucks, compaction rollers, tractors, air compressors, shovels, rakes, and brooms.

Drives trucks to collect trash, yard waste/brush, bulky objects, appliances, and recyclable materials, and transports materials to landfill. Picks up and removes trash and debris scattered around dumpsters, on city streets and alleys.

Assists with loading and unloading of trucks and secures materials to truck with tarps or rope to avoid loss of materials while traveling. Hand loads refuse and waste as needed.       

Performs daily inspections and preventative maintenance on trucks and equipment, including but not limited to checking fuel, lubricants, filters, tires, tire pressure, and monitoring wear and tear of equipment.

Sweeps garage area and cleans trucks and equipment as needed.

Assists with assembling and delivering solid waste containers to customers as requested.

Periodically assists recycling department, including sorting materials and collecting and dumping recycling containers.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervision.

Skills and Knowledge:

High school diploma or GED.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures governing operations set forth by the Richmond Sanitary District and Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).

Knowledge of assigned department trucks, vehicles, and equipment, with ability to safely load, haul, and dump materials and complete related safety and maintenance measures.

Knowledge of safety precautions and practices applicable to working with trucks, vehicles, and a variety of combustible materials, with ability to assure safety of self and others at all times.

Working knowledge of recyclable materials and recycling procedures and practices, and ability to collect and sort materials as assigned. Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of a medical exam and a drug test.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City departments, supervisors, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

Ability to safely operate a variety of trucks and hand/power tools in performance of duties, including but not limited to dump trucks, hook and rear loading trash trucks, compaction rollers, tractors, air compressors, shovels, rakes, and brooms.

Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Possession of a valid driver’s license and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with required endorsements and demonstrated safe driving record.

Responsibility:

Incumbent performs regular, recurring duties according to a flexible, customary routine with priorities determined by supervisor and service needs of the public.  Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures, with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual matters, such as procedure or schedule changes.  Errors in work are primarily detected or prevented through supervisory review, procedural safeguards, or notification from other departments.

Incumbent reports directly to Solid Waste Collection and Recycling Manager.

Physical Effort: 

Incumbent’s duties involve moderate physical exertion, such as sitting for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and handling/grasping objects.

Working Conditions:

Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and is regularly exposed to normal hazards associated with trash collection, such as inclement weather, dirt, dust, grease, fumes, toxic chemicals, odors, excessive noise, traffic, heavy equipment and moving parts.  Incumbent may wear protective clothing or equipment, such as safety vests, steel toe boots, and gloves. Safety procedures must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self or others. Incumbent occasionally works extended evening and/or weekend hours.
